What do macroinvertebrate indices measure? Stressor‐specific stream macroinvertebrate indices can be confounded by other stressors

چکیده
Monitoring programmes worldwide use biota to assess the “health” of water bodies. Indices based on are used describe change in status sites over time, identify progress against management targets and diagnose causes biological degradation. A variety numerical stressor-specific biotic indices have been developed response differences stressors among sites. Yet, it is not clear how variation pressures within sites, what time period, combination has greatest impact different groups. An understanding temporal influences assessment would assist setting achievable help focus catchment-scale mitigation strategies ensure that they deliver desired improvements condition. Hydrochemical data provided by a network high-frequency (15 or 30 min) automated monitoring stations 3 years were matched replicated understand influence spatio-temporal pollution indices. summarised various ways reflect central tendency, peaks, troughs 1–90 days before collection each sample. objective model selection procedure was determine which hydrochemical determinand, best explained Stressor-specific derived from macroinvertebrates purportedly stress low flows, excess fine sediment, nutrient enrichment, pesticides organic significantly inter-correlated reflected periods oxygen concentration, even though only one index (ASPTWHPT, average score per taxon) designed for this purpose. Changes community composition resulting stressor frequently lead confounding effects Variation ASPTWHPT described dissolved calculated as Q5 10 days, suggesting events had most period. Longer-term apparent, but masked recovery. Macroinvertebrate abundance Q95 stream velocity 60 slower recovery numbers than trait ASPTWHPT. Although supported, we recommend additional independent evidence should be corroborate any conclusions regarding degradation drawn other The such alone risks mistargeting if putative stressor-index approach taken more reliable results herein suggest.

The Tarland Catchment Initiative and its effect on stream water quality and macroinvertebrate indices.
The Tarland Catchment Initiative is a partnership venture between researchers, land managers, regulators, and the local community. Its aims are to improve water quality, promote biodiversity, and increase awareness of catchment management. In this study, the effects of buffer strip installations and remediation of a large septic tank effluent were appraised by water physico-chemistry (suspended...
متن کاملStream Macroinvertebrate Response to Clearcut Logging
Why study response of stream invertebrates to watershed disturbances such as clearcut logging? Stream invertebrates can be excellent integrators of changes in such ecosystem phenomena as changes in the food base of ecosystems. For example, a number of invertebrate taxa appear to track changes in food resources (Hawkins et al. 1982; Fuller et al. 1986; Wallace and Gurtz 1986; Feminella and Hawki...
متن کاملResponse of fish and macroinvertebrate bioassessment indices to water chemistry in a mined Appalachian watershed.
Multimetric indices based on fish and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages are commonly used to assess the biological integrity of aquatic ecosystems. However, their response to specific stressors is rarely known. We quantified the response of a fish-based index (Mid-Atlantic Highlands Index of Biotic Integrity, MAH-IBI) and a benthic invertebrate-based index (West Virginia Stream Condition In...
متن کاملUV “Indices”—What Do They Indicate?
Ultra-Violet (UV) radiation covers the spectrum of wavelengths from 100 to 400 nm. The potency and biological activity for a variety of endpoints differ by wavelength. For monitoring and communication purposes, different UV action spectra have been developed. These spectra use different weighting functions. The action spectrum for erythemal dose is the most widely used one. This erythemal dose ...
متن کاملRelationships between land use , spatial scale and stream macroinvertebrate communities
1. The structure of lotic macroinvertebrate communities may be strongly influenced by land-use practices within catchments. However, the relative magnitude of influence on the benthos may depend upon the spatial arrangement of different land uses in the catchment. 2. We examined the influence of land-cover patterns on in-stream physico-chemical features and macroinvertebrate assemblages in nine...
